Matthew Coorey has just completed a term as Conductor in Residence of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the first such post in the Orchestra’s history. He was previously Assistant Conductor and Music Director of the Merseyside Youth Orchestra; he was also Junior Fellow in Conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music.
Matthew was born in Sydney, Australia and began his musical studies when he was ten. His first instrument was the Horn and after graduating from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music he held positions with the Sydney Symphony and the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
Matthew has conducted the Sydney and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras, the Orchestra of Saint Luke's (New York), the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra, the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble 10:10, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Festival Orchestras of Aspen, Tanglewood and Schleswig- Holstein.
In 1999 Matthew auditioned for Seiji Ozawa and was offered a Conducting Scholarship to the Tanglewood Music Festival. Whilst at Tanglewood, Matthew performed and worked with renowned conductors such as Seiji Ozawa, André Previn, and Jorma Panula. Matthew has also participated in Panula's classes in Moscow and Australia.
Matthew has had tuition from many other leading conductors, including Gerard Schwarz (whom he currently assists), Edo de Waart, Mark Elder CBE, Peter Ëotvös, Ton Koopman, Baldur Brönnimann and David Zinman.
In 2002, Matthew was a finalist in the Maazel- Vilar Conducting Competition, released his first recording for Naxos Records and relocated to the United Kingdom, where he commenced his work at the RNCM. In 2003, he was appointed Assistant Conductor of the RLPO, Music Director of the Merseyside Youth Orchestra and made his debut with Ensemble 10:10.
In 2004 Matthew made his debut in the RLPO's subscription season, deputizing at late notice for an indisposed Tamas Vasary, and he conducted the Orchestra in subscription concerts of his own last season and this. Last year he conducted for the first time with the London Mozart Players and the Hallé and made his début with the Seattle Symphony at the invitation of Maestro Gerard Schwarz.
Last year he returned to the Hallé and conducted Mozart’s ‘Jewel Box’ for Bampton Classical Opera, again with LMP. He was Assistant Conductor on Glyndebourne’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. He placed in the Top Three at the Solti Conducting Competition, drawn from over 500 entrants. He conducted the Frankfurt Radio Symphony and the Frankfurter Museumsorchester including an acclaimed performance of Bartok's 'Miraculous Madarin' Suit
This year he has made a number of debuts: he toured New Zealand with the New Zealand Symphony in February and conducted the Orchestra of Opera North last month. Ths month he conducts the Tasmanian Symphony and returns to Australia in the summer to conduct 'Orphee et Euridice' at the Victorian Opera in Melbourne. In 2008 he will conduct the London Philharmonic for the first time.
